14 years ago today, on April 27, 2011, the largest tornado outbreak in recorded history would occur in the south/southeast United States. A record number of EF5 & EF4 Tornadoes would be documented across 4 states. More specifically, the state of Alabama took an especial hit, with multiple cities & towns seeing violent tornadoes within their limits. One of the strongest and more notable tornadoes that day was the Hackleburg, AL EF5. This twister infamously tore directly through the cities of Phil Campbell & Hackleburg, along its 102 mile long path across Northern AL. As a result of this, this twister has been somewhat documented through both videos and pictures. However, the otherwise rural area this tornado struck does mean any new media from it is a relatively big deal. So, when I found a video on youtube titled “Tornado” a few months ago, I was determined to find out what twister was being shown. The footage was extremely ominous, showing a rainy and massive wedge tornado approach the videographer. I knew that no matter what twister this was, it was a strong one. So, I reached out to a few friends of mine in order to see if this video could be geolocated. To my luck, my friend Jack of Tornado Forensics came through with the EXACT location. This actually managed to align with the path of the Hackleburg EF5. That meant, after 14 years, an essentially unseen video of the devastating tornado has been uncovered.
