It was the day World War II came to Australia. Now 79 years on, the bombing of Darwin was commemorated in a re-enactment ceremony in the city. Darwin was attacked by more than 60 enemy aircraft and 11 ships were sunk in the harbour. More than 250 Australians and Allies were killed, and 400 civilians injured. The sustained air assault continued over the Top End for the next 21 months.
