Elijah Wood and Frank Khalfoun talk about their remake of the 1980 slasher film "Maniac".

When asked what he wanted to bring to Maniac's dark character, Frank Zito, Wood said, "It was important to me that the character come to life in a believable way. I guess for me the biggest challenge was just to not fall into cliché. I think when it comes to a serial killer; a villain in a film, it's sort of easy to fall into familiar areas or tropes in the creation of that character."

Wood went on to say that it was a fun character to construct. "It was also a very multi-faceted performance because a good portion of it's off camera, some of it's very specifically on camera, and then all of it is vocal. It's a character in three parts. It was really fun to create the character from all those different perspectives.."

When it was pointed out that Wood seems to be going through a dark phase in the characters he's played since his most famous performance as Peter Jackson's reluctant hero in the film adaptation of J.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Wood said that he's always been a fan of the horror genre.

"I've been a fan of the genre forever. So it's really representative me of as a whole for a long, long time. It just so happens that some of these things are coalescing around the same time."

To casting "America's Good Son" as a psycho-scalper director Khalfoun responded, "It's exciting. It's fun to destroy that image," which was met my laughs all around.

Wood also spoke briefly about his character alongside ex-porn star Sasha Grey in Open Windows.

"It's a thriller that takes place entirely on a computer screen. Basically, my character in that is an innocent caught up in a scenario in which Sasha's character is kidnapped and he is sort of made implicit and therefore recognizes that and tries to save her."
