🇨🇺 Tips for visiting Cuba as a U.S citizen 🇨🇺

💸 You have to pull enough cash to last your entire trip in Cuba!
U.S. credit & debit cards don’t work there so I recommend pulling out small bills. Only exchange to Cuban pesos in small amounts because outside of Cuba their money can’t be used anywhere else. Since I was on a group trip with that included pretty much everything, I only spent $100 for the entire 9 days for non-included activities & dinners and tip for our guide.

🥘 Food variety is limited
You will be eating the same thing pretty much everyday: rice & beans, some protein & yucca. Pack snacks especially if you’re vegetarian/vegan.

🗣️ Pack donations
The situation in Cuba is complex and donations can seriously help people. Recommended items I was told were medicines, pads, kids toys, school supplies, clothing & electronics. Traveling is so much more than just enjoying the beaches & bars. Do your part…

🏨 U.S citizens can’t stay in hotels
Technically U.S. citizens can’t travel to Cuba for tourism. You have to pick one of 12 reasons to visit usually “to support the Cuban people.” For that reason, hotels are off limits because they are government run. Book your accommodations through Airbnb or find casa particulares

📵 No cell or internet service
Be prepared to be disconnected for majority of your visit. While some places do have wifi and you can buy e-sims, most places your service will not work. I legit couldn’t text or call anyone for like 7 out of 9 days we were there

👫🏾 Go with a group
I’m team solo travel but whew I would not recommend as a solo trip. It’s a beautiful country that should def be enjoyed with at least one other person

Extra tips:
You get your visa at the airport through your airline
Don’t speak Spanish at the airport even if you know Spanish 🌚
Keep toilet paper & wipes on you at all times because the public bathrooms usually won’t have any. You also sometimes have to pay to use the bathroom
Go with the flow & have an open mind
