With the UC Alumni group, we visited the University of Canterbury’s observatory at Mt. John near Tekapo. We got to look through one of the more powerful telescopes there, looking at the moons of Jupiter, as well as various stars and nebula, but the best part was exploring the moon. I have never seen so much lunar detail before, exploring craters and seeing the "cracks in the moon", ancient fault lines cutting across the moon's surface.

Lyrics "Cracks in the Moon
[Verse 1]
The road climbs high, in shadow we ascend,
Lights dim low where the mountains bend.
Lake below, a silvered glass,
Above us stars in silence pass.
[Verse 2]
Through iron eyes of the telescope’s frame,
The heavens open, they whisper names.
Moons of Jupiter drift in line,
But the lunar scars are only mine.
[Chorus]
Cracks in the moon, fractures deep and old,
Secrets of silence, stories untold.
Cold air cuts where the darkness blooms,
We wander forever through the cracks in the moon.
[Verse 3]
Craters rise where shadows fall,
Fault-lines trace the ancient call.
The surface broken, the past revealed,
A wounded sphere, yet never healed.
[Chorus]
Cracks in the moon, fractures deep and old,
Secrets of silence, stories untold.
Cold air cuts where the darkness blooms,
We wander forever through the cracks in the moon.
[Bridge]
Breath like smoke in the mountain night,
The roof rolls back, the sky alight.
Through frozen glass the silence sings,
The cosmos bends on fragile strings.
[Final Chorus]
Cracks in the moon, fractures deep and old,
Secrets of silence, stories untold.
Cold air cuts where the darkness blooms,
We wander forever through the cracks in the moon.
[Outro]
High on the hill where the dark is near,
The stars surround, the vision clear.
I found a map in the sky’s dim tune,
And lost myself in the cracks of the moon.
