Christoyannis, in what is in many ways a tour de force, is for the most part exceptional throughout. Just occasionally the recording itself captures a pulse in his upper registers when under pressure, but otherwise everything is beautifully phrased, melody and text are held in well-nigh ideal balance and the prevailing mood is one of almost confessional intimacy...It’s both a real treat and a fine set that immeasurably enhances our understanding of Hahn and his world. Do listen to it.

It is a treasure trove: the many unfamiliar songs all repay rehearing, and Christoyannis, at 53, still sounds youthful. Listening to one singer in this repertoire is a challenge, but the Greek baritone marries his subtle carriage of the vocal line to the service of the text.

Biography
Training and beginnings
He studied conducting and composition at the Athens Conservatory and singing with Aldo Protti , winning the Aldo Protti Gold Medal in 1994.
He then became a member of the Greek National Opera troupe in Athens until 1999, which gave him access to numerous roles in several types of repertoire such as Belcore ( L'Élixir d'amore ), Don Carlos ( Ernani ), Papageno ( Die Zauberflöte ), Conte Di Luna ( Il Trovatore ), Figaro ( The Barber of Seville ), Guglielmo ( Così fan tutte ), Eugene Onegin .
During the 2000s, he was a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein troupe in Düsseldorf, which allowed him to tackle several other roles in the Italian repertoire, in Verdi with Posa ( Don Carlos ), Germont ( La Traviata ) and in Bel canto with Enrico ( Lucia di Lammermoor ), Dandini ( La Cenerentola ), Taddeo ( The Italian Woman in Algiers ).
Career
In 2007, he was noticed by the critic of the magazine Res Musica for this role of Enrico in a Lucia di Lammermoor given at the grand theatre of Tours , who noted then "a beautiful discovery, the Greek baritone Tassis Christoyannis, singing very well, with a silky and well-toned voice, which nevertheless lacks nuances" [ 1 ] . He reprised the role at the end of 2007 at the Amsterdam opera [ 2 ] .
He then played numerous roles on international stages and made his debut at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels in 2005 as Germont in La Traviata and at the Paris Opera as Olivier in Capriccio directed by Robert Carsen in September 2007 [ 3 ] .
He then took on the role of Orestes in Grétry's rare Andromaque , given successively at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées [ 4 ] then at the Bozar in Brussels [ 5 ] in October 2009 and finally at the Festival de Radio France in Montpellier in July 2010, where the critics noted "Blessed with a bronze timbre, solid and homogeneous across the entire tessitura, the Greek baritone is the true revelation of the evening. His distraught Orestes inexorably descends into madness with a subtle progression that culminates in a truly hallucinatory final scene." [ 6 ]
He is again Figaro in The Barber of Seville in 2010 in Geneva in the production by Damiano Michieletto [ 7 ] and Ford in a Falstaff given at the Graslin theatre in Nantes in 2011 where the critic underlines "Tassis Christoyannis tears his character away from his customary stiffness and deploys a beautiful comic vis, sometimes to the limit of excess. No matter, we laugh, and the vocal means are there to characterize an atypical and convincing Ford" [ 8 ]
He then played Guy de Montfort in the Sicilian Vespers in Geneva in 2011 in a production by Christophe Loy [ 9 ] and then, after a Macbeth in Bordeaux [ 10 ] , returned to the Paris Opera for a Figaro in 2012 [ 11 ] followed by a Silvio ( Pagliacci ) [ 12 ] . He also played the role of Germont père in La Traviata in multiple venues, including those in Geneva and Nantes [ 13 ] in 2013. He ended the year with critical acclaim for his Don Giovanni in Tours, described as a "magnificent libertine" [ 14 ] and whose critics highlighted the masterful portrayal of the role "Tassis Christoyannis plays with the notes - he has each one, insolently - and manages to make the whole show revolve around him" [ 15 ] .
He also performed Taddeo in L' Italienne à Alger at the Opéra Garnier [ 16 ] just before an engagement at the Opéra Comique in the title role of Charles Lecocq's work, Ali Baba [ 17 ] , [ 18 ] . He then performed as Duparquet in Ciboulette, still at the Salle Favart in 2015 [ 19 ] .
In 2024, he was appointed artistic director of the Olympia Theatre in Athens and of the musical ensembles of the Municipality of Athens [ 36 ] ."Wikipedia (edited)
