Elske Kampen is a poet from the Dutch province of Friesland, who most often writes in the West Frisian language. She has won various literary prizes, including both the Fedde Schurer Prize and the Fedde Schurer Readers’ Prize for her 2012 collection Fan glês it brekken.

Three of David McKay’s English translations of her poems, including two of the three poems read here, will soon be featured on the Poetry International website (http://www.poetryinternational.com) as part of a growing set of English translations of Frisian-language poetry. Kampen's work has not yet been published in book form in English.

The English translations are from the original Frisian and informed by Dutch translations by Jantsje Post and by the author.
