Adam Gidwitz talks about “Max in the House of Spies: A Tale of World War II” on this edition of "The Kids' Bookshelf." The novel for Middle-Grade readers is inspired in part by the real-life "Kindertransport" which took place before WWII to get Jewish children out of Germany. Max is transported to London where he ends up in a house of spies. Max convinces his host family to send him back to Germany to serve as a spy against the Nazis. Max does a brilliant job as a spy and pulls off amazing missions to outwit his enemies.

Although dealing with a serious topic the story is filled with humor and the amazing exploits of Max carrying out his spy mission. With Max are two immortal creatures living on Max’s shoulders that were inspired by Jewish and German folklore. One is a dybbuk named Stein and the other a kobold named Berg.

Adam Gidwitz's previous books include the Newbery Honor-winning “The Inquisitor's Tale,” the “A Tale Dark and Grimm” trilogy, and “The Unicorn Rescue Society” series. H

I requested and was provided with a copy of the book, but this video is not sponsored.

Hi!, I'm Dan Skinner. Thanks for watching this interview. "The Kids' Bookshelf" is a channel for adults looking for age-appropriate books for the children in their lives. The series features interviews with authors and illustrators of children's books including picture books, chapter books, and middle-grade books. Viewers will learn about the inspiration for the books, what themes are explored in the books, and see sample illustrations. My goal is to give you enough information to decide if the book would be a good addition to your child's library. The series also provides a sneak peek into the creative process of the authors and illustrators.

If you are interested in books for adults, please check out my "Some Books Considered" channel. (Link Below)
