Welcome to Job Hunters! Today we're going to go over the job interview question, "Tell me about yourself." We're going to show you some good examples and some bad examples on how to answer it. That's coming up!

Hey guys! I'm Kim with Snagajob and welcome to Job Hunters, our weekly job search show. Now if you've been following us for a while you'll notice that we just renamed the show and we're excited to continue to bring you job search advice and tips.

This week we're going to talk about the job interview question, "Tell me about yourself." If you've been in a job interview, I'd be willing to be that you got this question before. If you've never been in a job interview, this is something you really want to practice because chances are you are going to get this. This is probably the most common interview question and your interview probably will start out with this. So this is really your first impression with your interviewer. We know you're awesome. You know you're awesome. But this is your chance to show the interviewer that you can make the best employee.

The best way to answer this job interview question is to follow the "S.E.T." model:
1) The Skills that you have
2) the Experience that you've gained and
3) how long (Time) you've been at it.

Example:

"I've been working in the customer service field in the restaurant industry as a server for about five years now. I really enjoy the industry as a whole, which is why I'm really looking forward to this opportunity."

Let's break this answer down:

Skills: "I've been working in the customer service field..."
Experience: "in the restaurant industry as a server..."
Time: "for about five years now."
Bringing your answer back to the job: "I really enjoy the industry as a whole, which is why I'm really looking forward to this opportunity."

Other tips for answering this question:
Be concise. Keep your answers short and sweet. Your life may be interesting but you want to keep your answer relevant to the job.
Make sure your answer is relevant. Your rock collection may be awesome but they really don't need to see that.
Finally, be excited! Don't forget that you're talking about yourself. If you're excited, then the interviewer will be excited about you too!
This is a very common interview question so your best bet to have a successful interview is to make sure you practice to this question before you go in. You don't want to be caught off guard and something like this will most definitely be asked in a job interview.
