Welcome back to Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, the fifth instalment in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell franchise. The game features Sam Fisher as he is on the run from the NSA after being blamed for the murder of his former boss and friend, Irving Lambert, in Double Agent. Sam is whiling away his time in Malta when Grim manages to get in contact with him and informs him of a threat to his life, which leads him to information about Sarah and her disappearance, opening up a long-buried can of worms. The gameplay for this iteration has been changed to a simplified binary light and shadow mechanic, and sound no longer plays a large role. Furthermore, the focus has shifted to sneaking and neutralising targets instead of slipping in and out undetected like it was in the previous iterations, causing a divide among the fans.

As the NSA closes in on their investigation and eradication of Eastern evil, Archer has been handed his next assignment, which makes things a little clearer. Kestrel is to infiltrate Mozdok Grounds on behalf of Third Echelon and discreetly eliminate all hostiles within without raising the alarm. This means no unsuppressed gunshots and definitely no explosions. The nuclear testing facility of Mozdok Grounds is divided into five distinct areas: Loading and Storage, Control Centre, Research, Development, and finally, the Airbase itself.
