Graz is the provincial capital of Styria and with approx. 300,000 inhabitants the second largest city in the Republic of Austria. The city lies on both sides of the Mur in the Graz Basin. The greater Graz area has (unfortunately) been the fastest growing metropolitan area in Austria over the past ten years.
The Grazer Feld was a densely populated agricultural landscape during the Roman Empire. In the 6th century a castle was built here, from which the name Graz is derived (Slovene gradec means small castle). From 1379 to 1619 the city was the Habsburg residence and withstood several Ottoman attacks during this period. In 2003 Graz was the European Capital of Culture. Graz has developed into a university city with a total of almost 60,000 students. It was chosen to be a human rights city. The old town of Graz and Eggenberg Palace are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Graz is the bishopric of the Graz-Seckau diocese.

Graz ist die Landeshauptstadt der Steiermark und mit ca 300000 Einwohnern die zweitgrößte Stadt der Republik Österreich. Die Stadt liegt an beiden Seiten der Mur im Grazer Becken. Der Großraum Graz war in den letzten zehn Jahren (leider) der am schnellsten wachsende Ballungsraum Österreichs. Das Grazer Feld war in der römischen Kaiserzeit eine dicht besiedelte Agrarlandschaft. Im 6. Jahrhundert wurde hier eine Burg errichtet, von der sich der Name Graz ableitet (slowenisch gradec bedeutet kleine Burg). Von 1379 bis 1619 war die Stadt habsburgische Residenzstadt und widerstand in diesem Zeitraum mehreren osmanischen Angriffen. 2003 war Graz Kulturhauptstadt Europas.
Graz hat sich zu einer Universitätsstadt mit insgesamt fast 60.000 Studenten entwickelt. Sie wurde zur Menschenrechtsstadt erkoren. Die Altstadt von Graz und das Schloss Eggenberg gehören zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Graz ist Bischofssitz der Diözese Graz-Seckau.
