Theresia Bastion, also known as the City Bastion (Bastionul Cetatii), is the only remaining bastion from the Timișoara fortress during the Austro-Hungarian Empire period. The bastion was rehabilitated between 2008 and 2010 and previously housed commercial spaces, restaurants, bars, a nightclub, a library, and two permanent exhibitions of the Banat Museum. After rehabilitation, the complex was intended for cultural activities, with limited public food services. The bastion was built in 1732, immediately after the completion of the hydraulic works on the Bega River, which ensured the necessary water supply for the fortress. Initially, it was conceived as a ravelin, surrounded by water, and was later renamed Theresia Bastion in honor of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. Throughout history, the bastion has served various purposes, including as the residence of the Roman Catholic Bishopric, workshops, depots, schools, and archives.
