Triang Wrenn produced diecast model rail items from the 1960s to the early 1990s. In their latter years, Wrenn A4s would retail new for £100, making them premier collector's models at the time, compared to Hornby's tender-drive locos. The toolings were acquired from Hornby Dublo.
Whilst perhaps not as "super-detailed" for the modern model rail enthusiast, the diecast body and chassis construction lead to a very powerful locomotive, built in Britain, to last. Here, number 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley is put to her paces on the Hornby rolling road, 12V DC supply.
Review:
The Wrenn A4 is a wonderful collector's model, that will bring an air of respectability to any layout. Built in Britain, in more favourable economic times, and even after nearly 40 years service, she won't let you down. Detail fans beware, you won't find any interior detailing in the cab, and you may well find fault with the tender design. It's a very basic rendition of the A4 design, but with a nice paint finish, and metal construction, still looks good alongside modern models.
Some points to note: you can convert them to DCC, but you would need to do some chassis modification to isolate the brushes from shorting with the metal chassis, and a good 1A decoder. Even so, the Wrenn A4 is probably best suited to DC running.
Additional points: There are a number of "variants" due to the ad hoc way in which they were produced. Expect to see variations in "garter blue" between complete models (a tender from one may not match another loco you own). Note also the tender is plastic, and utilises the Triang A3 design, which looks better than the Dublo version. The tender features NO bogie mounted axles. Early models have plastic Triang type wheels in the tender, front loco pony truck and rear cartazzi truck. At some point, they were produced with all metal wheels.
