STORYLINE:
Israelis reacted to the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as constant missile salvos from Iran sent people in Israel in and out of shelters.

Iran had fired missiles at targets in Israel and Gulf Arab states after vowing massive retaliation for the killing of Khamenei by the United States and Israel.

"This Khamenei is one of a group of ayatollahs there; he is not alone, after all, this man," said Shimon Markus, who lives in the Tel Aviv area. "We really hope that their people can get rid of these ayatollahs, these extreme, dangerous Shiites who hate Israel."

"What happened here is very difficult for the residents, but we hope for the best that during Purim we will have great joy and that the people of Israel succeed in defeating all their enemies," said Haim Nagar, another resident.

Iranian state television and the state-run IRNA news agency announced the 86-year-old's death early Sunday. U.S. President Donald Trump had announced his death hours earlier, saying it gave Iranians their “greatest chance” to “take back” their country.

The strikes opened a stunning new chapter in U.S. intervention in Iran, marking the second time in eight months that the Trump administration has attacked the country during talks over its nuclear program. The killing of Khamenei after decades in power appeared certain to create a significant leadership vacuum given the absence of a known successor and because the supreme leader had final say on all major policies.
