What About the Residents’ Prescriptions?

Filling prescriptions; how does that work in a residential assisted living facility? Well here's the deal. We cannot give them medication other than to pass it to them, so if they have medication, their pharmacy has delivered it to the home or we've ordered it and helped them with that or the family member brings it in.


• Number one, you need to have doctor’s orders.

• Medication can’t come into the home unless we know what it is and doctor’s permission is given.

• If medications need to be refilled, we'll remind the resident’s family, their POA (Power of Attorney) whoever it is that's doing things for them that they need to order that prescription and have it delivered. Either they bring it or it's delivered to the home but it must come in with doctor’s orders.

• We do pass medications with the proper training for caregivers, med techs, or the manager themselves. You've got to follow the rules in your state. Not that typical to do but that' s how we handle prescriptions.
