In our previous videos for this series about “Common Mistake’s Beginner Rider’s Make,” I explained where the rider’s leg and foot should be as well as correct rider position in the saddle when riding in both a saddle and bareback.

I demonstrated how important the correct position of both is to the rider’s balance, ability to be fluid with the horse and to feel secure in the saddle.

Today I am going to talk about where our hands need to be and how and where to hold the reins when we are riding. First, I’d like to discuss and demonstrate correct hand position when riding.

Whether you ride English, dressage, western or bareback, your hands should always remain within an 8” square diameter above your horse’s whither area. This is to ensure you maintain:
Your balance point and a secure position on the horse
Stay behind the horse’s center of gravity – heaviest part of the horse
Keep from leaning forward
Keep off the forehand

In addition, I’m going to explain and demonstrate how to hold the reins and what’s appropriate for the following:
Different styles of riding: Western/reining, dressage, hunter, trail riding
Different levels of training: Starting, warming up, advanced levels
Different levels of rider experience: Beginner, intermediate, advanced

Stay tuned for our next video in this series where I will be explaining and demonstrating rein length -what is appropriate, and safe, for different disciplines and styles of riding.
