Hey guys! In this video, we Discover Khartoum-Sudan. This is the capital of the North African nation of Sudan. The city is major trade and communications center for Northern Africa with a railway network connecting Egypt, Port Sudan and Al-Ubayyid. The city also connects to other countries and cities through the river traffic on the Blue and White Nile rivers.
In this video, we discover the Khartoum life. We look at the city's history, people & culture, transport and the cost of living.

HISTORY
The word Khartoum has many theories on how it came up. Some sources say it comes from the Arabic word Khurtum (trunk) which is depicted by the narrow strip of land extending between the White and Blue Niles. Other sources say Khartoum comes from a Dinka word Khiertuom as it is pronounced in the Dinka dialects which basically means a "place where two rivers meet". This is greatly supported by history which places the Dinka origin (homeland) around central Sudan which is present-day Khartoum.
1821- City establishment North of the ancient city of Soba by Ismail Pasha the third son of Egyptian ruler Muhammad Ali Pasha. Khartoum was meant to serve as an Egyptian army outpost but the city rapidly grew into a regional center of trade.
1899 - The town became the capital of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and a Railways line was officially established and it began its operation
1956 - The town was officially recognized as the Sudanese capital after Sudan had fully gained her independence from the British and Egyptians in the same year.

PEOPLE & CULTURE
Khartoum has a population of 6 million people with multiple ethnic backgrounds. These include Sudanese Arabs (Highest percentage), Fur people, The Beja people, Nuba and Nubian people.
Sudanese Arabic and English languages serve as the official languages and most spoken languages in the city plus other languages spoken such as Nubian and the Beja language.
Khartoum is greatly influenced by Arabic culture and this is evidently seen through the music, food, dances and much more.

TRANSPORT
If you're to move from one point to another of Khartoum, you can either use a bus or hire a private driver. The taxis roughly charge about $1.10 for a 1 Mile distance

COST OF LIVING
Looking at how much it would cost you to afford the basics of life such as; food, housing, transport, education, medical care, etc...
A meal would cost you about $3 at most ordinary restaurants in Khartoum but you could even save much more if you decide to prepare your meals at home.
A One bedroomed house would cost you around $160 per month in one of the suburbs in Khartoum
