Dense Breasts Explained: Facts, Risks, and Recommendations - with Dr Tasha

Having dense breasts means that the tissue in your breasts is composed of more glandular and fibrous tissue than fatty tissue. This can make mammograms more challenging to interpret because both dense breast tissue and cancer appear white on a mammogram, making it harder to distinguish between the two. Dense breasts are common and not abnormal; in fact, about half of all women have dense breasts.

However, having dense breasts can slightly increase the risk of developing breast cancer and may require additional screening tests, such as ultrasound or MRI, in addition to mammograms, to ensure accurate detection and diagnosis.
