Overview: Close to the Glass is a smorgasbord of styles and genres underneath the umbrella of The Notwist's ever expanding sound. Parts of this record, specifically the beginning, are the signature indie electronica sound we loved on Neon Golden. Several tracks adopt poppier formats, focusing on big, catchy choruses with great vocal hooks. There is even a track that sounds straight off of m b v. The inevitable question whenever we listen to an album with tons of variety is how well do all the different pieces fit together? In this case, The Notwist do a great job. Close to the Glass is pretty consistent from a songwriting quality standpoint, and they balance the album nicely making for a fluid listening experience. While nothing about this record blew our minds, it's clearly enjoyable and well done.
