Yamabuki Ogon is a one coloured metallic Koi.

A Yamabuki ogon is a very simple Koi. Just one colour: yellow. It’s not just yellow, Yamabuki refers to an elegant flower that is part of the rose family. And what you can often see in flowers is that single flowers can consists of many different colours and intensiveness of the colour. Exactly what you can see when you look closely to a Yamabuki ogon. Every scale can look like a flower, usually darker and deeper yellow in the middle and whiter around the scales. The structure is quite complex.

Izumiya Koi Farm is the most famous for his massive Yamabuki Ogon. They develop slowly, their colours are very intense and they can reach over 1 metre in length.

Typical for Yamabuki ogon is the Fukurin on the skin. This is typical for the Ogon variety, so not only the yamabuki ogon but also mukashi ogon or platinum ogon. Fukurin is used as a Japanese term to describe the scales. Around each scales it looks like the skin is a little bit thicker. These are the whiter sections that lay around each scale. The older the Yamabuki becomes, usually the more intensive the fukurin can become. It can surely look very impressive.

Take into account that yellow can become orange if you select a tosai that is too dark and heavy yellow already. So you actually want to select your yamabuki ogon as light as possible. You want an almost white head and a really soft and light looking yellow skin. Don’t worry if it is too light and almost looks yellow. This will develop quickly and become really yellow outside in the sun. It’s just a matter of time.

For Yamabuki ogon it is important that you take body aspects into accounts. This includes a long head, wide eyes, a good torpedo looking body, a wide and high tail and a wide mouth. In this video we provide you some more details on body aspects, for example on the Jitai or the backbone of a Koi.
