Have you ever seen something on Etsy and thought, "I could make that!"? In this video, I'm doing just that, taking inspiration from some expensive wooden birds I found on Etsy and building my own versions using pallet wood. I'll show you how I created a toucan, a parrot, and a puffin, all from scratch.

The Build: Join me in my shed as I take you through the entire process, step-by-step. From cutting the initial pieces on the band saw, to sanding and gluing, and then the final finishing touches, you’ll see how each bird comes to life. I'll share some tips and tricks I learned along the way, including what not to do when gluing up! You'll see the difference between my first attempt with too much glue, and a better approach on subsequent builds.

The Birds: This project features three unique wooden birds:

A toucan with its distinctive large beak

A parrot with a customizable tail (I show you how to make it point up or down for display on a shelf!). I am including a free plan for the Parrot!

A puffin, to complete the set

Etsy Inspiration: I was amazed at how much these birds were selling for on Etsy and thought it would be a fun challenge to make my own. I'll show you the exact measurements of the original toucan to give you an idea of scale. This project is perfect if you are looking for a DIY project or want to create a unique display for your home.

Materials: I primarily used pallet wood for these builds, making it a budget-friendly project. I also used some offcuts from other projects, and some wood bought from a big box store.

Finishing: I will show you how I finished the birds using a dark wax and talk about some lessons learned about staining different types of wood.

I'll also be sharing my free plan for the parrot which includes the choice of a tail pointing across or down. The plans for the toucan and puffin are available on my Etsy page.
