In May 2000, amidst one of the bloodiest civil wars in African history, British PM Tony Blair ordered the establishment of a rapid reaction force and swift military intervention in the former British colony of Sierre Leone. Since independence in 1961, a series of coups had engulfed the country, with an all-out civil war raging between the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) (supported by Liberian government) and the Joseph Saidu Momoh government from 1991 onwards – characterised by extensive war crimes against civilian populations.

The second major operation of the Blair government after Kosovo, Operation Palliser began on the 7th of May with the rapid deployment of over 800 paras and the SAS to Senegal and Sierra Leone, as rebel forces advanced on the capital of Freetown. The operation would successfully prop up the flailing UN peacekeeping mission (UNAMSIL) ahead of more dramatic undertakings later in the year (Operation Barras from September). This compilation of previously unseen rushes and news footage details the dramatic beginning of Operation Palliser in Sierra Leone, where it’s been said “Tony Blair remains more popular [here] than anywhere else on the planet.” The Sierra Leone Civil War would conclude in 2002, with up to 70k casualties estimated.
