The Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) is a unique species that is present at higher elevations within Crater Lake National Park. Many old specimens line the rim of the caldera including the Grandmother Tree, which is believed to be 500 years old.

It is a keystone species within the park because of its ability to grow on barren soils, and to feed a lot of wildlife, including the Clark’s Nutcracker.

Unfortunately, the tree is declining throughout much of its range thanks to the introduced White Pine Blister Rust fungus, and climate change increasing the feeding demand of the native mountain pine beetle. Groups like The Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation are working to restore and protect this pine and other high-elevation species.
