Plant Based Protein Powder and Kidney Disease - Throw It Out or Use It? Alternatives?

One of our clients recently had a very interesting question and a very important one for those following a plant-based diet. Their question was, “Can I Use A Plant-Based Protein Powder If I Have Kidney Disease?”

Protein powders are very commonly recommended to people with kidney disease if they have low protein levels and to bring them up. The problem, however, is that we know that all protein is that it’s harder on the kidneys. Vegetarian sources of protein deliver less stress on the kidneys than animal sources. So, if you have kidney disease, you don’t want to use an animal-based protein powder as they will put more pressure on the kidneys.

There are lots of plant-based proteins out there made out of rice, peas, soy protein powders, and a lot of different combinations. These are much easier on your kidneys but it’s still protein so it will stress the kidneys a little bit.

When you take it in a powder form, you’re getting a lot of protein in one shot and that’s not very good for your kidneys. Overall, it is better to use a plant-based protein powder over an animal-based protein.

An uncharted better option that is not discussed enough among kidney disease sufferers and medical professionals is to take an essential amino acid powder. Amino acids make up protein and the essential ones are the ones we have to get from our diet. If you don’t get enough from your diet, you may become protein deficient.

We mentioned above that plant-based protein powder is recommended over animal protein but an even better option is by taking essential amino acids and there’s a reason why. The reason is that you’re going to get all those essential amino acids that makeup protein but in a broken-down form without any toxins and without all the processing your kidney would have to do.
