Nansha district was established on April 28, 2005, and was designated as a national new zone and free trade zone by the State Council in 2012 and 2014.

Nansha is the hub connecting the city groups on the banks of the Pearl River Estuary and is located in the southern part of Guangzhou, right at the geometric center of the Greater Pearl River Delta Economic Region and at the supporting position of the "A" shape formed by Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macao.

The Nansha district is the main waterway of the Pearl River Estuary and the sole route from Guangzhou to the ocean. It possesses the advantages required for the development of a worldwide deepwater port and port-related industries, and as such, it is the ideal place for Guangzhou and Guangdong province to modify and improve their industrial structures.
The region is home to the world's top 12 ports and shipping hubs, as well as China's largest vehicle and parts production and export bases, as well as advanced equipment sector clusters. It also boasts several national-level scientific research innovation institutes and incubators, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

The cargo routes of the Nansha deepwater port cover the world's major commercial areas, including Europe, the Americas, South East Asia, the Middle East, and Australia. With the completion of the second and third stages of the Nansha Port project, a new pattern for modernized international ports and adjacent industrial zones has emerged. The Nansha government intends to use the international port to develop an ancillary industrial zone that will include fundamental industries such as ship building, iron and steel processing, and petroleum-chemicals, promoting the coordinated development of Guangzhou's traditional industries, nearby high-tech industries, and service industries.
