The UJ Writing Centres:

The University of Johannesburg has four Writing Centres; one on each campus (Auckland Park Kingsway, Auckland Park Bunting Road, Doornfontein and Soweto).

The Writing Centres aim to assist students to gain access into their field-specific knowledge communities through writing. Abstract features and rules of academic writing are clarified and explicitly taught to students through one-on-one and small group consultations.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate students work with Writing Centre Consultants to elicit the complex conversation involved in academic writing. Areas of focus include higher-order concerns such as structural questions, the development evidence coherence and cohesion, and understanding of the issues or topic at hand.

The Writing Centres also offer academic literacies workshops in collaboration with disciplinary staff on various aspects of writing development to support teaching and learning in the university.

The centres also participate to varying to degrees in the design of teaching and learning materials.
