The show was considered groundbreaking for two reasons. First, it was the first show that very realistically depicted the issues that average working-class families faced. Second, Roseanne Conner, the family matriarch was very different from all the television show housewives that the TV audiences had seen before -- Roseanne Conner was loud, bossy, and dominating. The show captured the attention of the audiences and continued climbing the rating charts. It continued for nine seasons and also won many awards. But most importantly, it made Roseanne Barr a massive star.

Roseanne featured many regulars. John Goodman played Roseanne's husband Dan; Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke played her daughter Becky; and Michael Fishman played her son D.J. Other regular cast members included Laurie Metcalf as Roseanne's sister; George Clooney as her boss Booker Brooks; Estelle Parsons; Martin Mull; and Sandra Bernhard. The last episode of the show aired on May 20, 1997, after which Roseanne Barr hosted her talk show for two years. In 2018, ABC decided to give audiences a reboot version and the show was renewed for the 11th season. However, after Roseanne tweeted out racial comments against Valerie Jarett of the Obama administration, the network decided to cancel the show.
