Two-plane dynamic balancing in the shop sets you up for a more even keel in the full fan assembly. Learn how to balance an industrial fan in this instructional demo video.

Measuring amplitude of imbalance and impact by phase, the dynamic fan balance process allows us to adjust the fan wheel for better performance when added to the complete fan assembly. Senior Application Engineer Chet White demonstrates exactly how to balance an industrial fan in this 3-minute video.

So let’s go over how this balance machine works. We have a 2-plane balance. And so the left plane - as we’re looking at it from the camera angle - the left plane is right here. The right plane is on the back side of this wheel.

As we start this wheel up and it begins to spin, we’re measuring for two things. We’re measuring for an amplitude of vibration. That amplitude is coming through these ports that are snapped onto the back of these planes. So this will vibrate as the wheel is spinning. And it will vibrate, and it will pick up an amplitude through that port.

The other step, the second part, is this tach reader. This tach reader is placed in a spot where it can come down and read along the shaft. And we have a tach strip right here that reports a zero degree spot on the 360 degree plane. And so our zero degree spot corresponds out here on the wheel. And so this is picking up our tach whenever it crosses that zero degree spot on the wheel.

And so between the amplitude reader and the tach reader, we pick up how much imbalance there is on each side of the wheel, and at what phase is the imbalance most significant. With that information, we know where to either weld weight on to balance the wheel, or to grind weight away 180 degrees across from where we would add weight on.

So now we’re going to actually spin up this wheel and show you how this works in motion. So our fan’s running now. At this moment, the wheel is spinning at roughly 60 RPM. This is about 1/10th of what it’ll run when it’s actually installed in the complete fan assembly. Our machine is working. You can see right here, our left apparatus is slightly moving, so there’s an amplitude that’s reading through onto our port back here. Our phase reader right here, our tach reader, there’s a laser coming down onto the shaft right now, and every single time this red tach strip comes around, it picks up the phase as it hits zero degrees. It’s reading out an imbalance on this side, that’s reporting into this machine, and giving us how much imbalance we have in this wheel and how much weight we either need to weld on to one spot or grind away from the point 180 degrees away from it.

The better we balance this wheel in this two-plane balance setup, the better it’s going to be when we put it into the complete fan assembly, run it up to full speed and trim balance it.
