Nerves are an essential part of the peripheral nervous system with over 100 billion cells. They are the threads that connect the different parts of the body with the brain and spinal cord.

The nerve cells found in these cord-like, yellowish structures are called neurons. They have one long extension called axon, which sends impulses, and several branches called dendrites for receiving electrical signals.

There are two types of nerves - cranial nerves and spinal nerves. Cranial nerves connect the brain with various parts of the head, neck and trunk. There are twelve pairs of cranial nerves. Spinal nerves branch out of the spaces between the vertebrae and the spinal cord. Each spinal nerve has a motor root and a sensory root.
