Biotica's red earthworms and environmental sustainability

When approaching the world of composting in Italy, you cannot ignore Biotica's red earthworms.

Care for the environment
In 2017, two young people founded this company in a town in the Etna park. Their mission was to recover the soil degraded by years of neglect or poor agriculture.

To this they added their passion for composting and breeding the so-called "tiger-worms".

Climate change
This phenomenon is now on everyone's lips, but few know that soil is an important regulator capable of absorbing and "fixing" large quantities of carbon. Unfortunately, however, we lose 75 billion tons of fertile soil every year. This is due to incorrect cultivation practices.

Earthworm compost is a soil improver particularly rich in carbon that will then be useful for our plants to grow healthy and strong. If you are wondering where this carbon comes from, the solution is simple: from waste that would have released it into the atmosphere.

In this perspective, the help of earthworms in maintaining our precious ecosystem is fundamental.

Chemical fertilizers all derive from oil, used to produce ammonia in large quantities and enrich the soil with nitrogen. Even the emissions of harmful gases from animal waste could create problems. Luckily, earthworms come to our aid, consuming a lot of manure and transforming it into humus. Furthermore, being extraordinary and tireless diggers, they could, in some cases, avoid us having to plow the soil. In fact, right in the first layers of earth there is an enormous flora and fauna that if "turned" could die.

Red earthworms by Biotica
Of course, earthworm farming can be considered a niche activity, but the most active company in the sector in Italy seems to be Biotica.

They chose to breed and sell Californian red earthworms because it is the most suitable species for composting organic matter.

The Eisenia Fetida species in fact boasts unique properties:

-they are very voracious and capable of consuming half their weight in food every day
-they reproduce very quickly
-they are resistant to a wide range of temperatures
-they do not escape and prefer to stay in the compost bin

Biotica fertilizers
Producing earthworms for profit, it is clear that they also have a lot of derivative products available. Not everyone is interested in taking care of animals and perhaps the idea of keeping worms in the garden or at home disgusts them. However, if you want to obtain excellent results in cultivation, whether of vegetables or even just flowers on the balcony, there is a solution.

It is called humicum.

For the laziest, you can opt for already fertilized soil. Or you can buy fertilizer. This is available in liquid form (or worm tea) and solid (humus).

These are obviously high-quality products that will benefit our crops by enriching them with nutrients, but not only that.

In fact, these products help improve soil structure, air permeability, water retention and absorption of solar rays. It also reduces the frost effect by creating a sort of natural cover.

Final considerations
Biotica's red earthworms are an excellent choice for starting a home composting project, both in open environments such as vegetable gardens or gardens and at home. By marketing several high-quality products, the company is reliable and the staff is available to resolve any doubts.

I really enjoyed my experience and I love their desire to do environmental sustainability. Improving the planet is everyone's duty and they take the issue very seriously.

Whether you are growing as a hobby or with more serious intentions, I invite you to learn more about the topics by visiting their website biotica.bio, where you will find lots of information on caring for red earthworms and composting.

See you soon!
