A message from the President and Founder of the Compton Heights Concert Band, Harry Swanger, regarding this extraordinary recording recorded LIVE in Tower Grove Park on August 4, 2008.

The August St. Louis night was sizzling hot in Tower Grove Park! Hugh Smith, the amazing tenor, was sizzling hot, too. It was the hottest night of the summer (100 degrees) and the Compton Heights Concert Band with Hugh Smith as the guest artist were performing, nonetheless. The finale concert of the Band’s 29th summer concert season was an amazing endurance test for the Band and Hugh. Out of this incredible environment, video and audio recordings were still made as best they could be under some of the worst weather conditions imaginable. Somehow, both the Band and Hugh made it through the concert and a large audience stayed for every second for one of the world’s greatest tenors, Hugh Smith!

Hugh never sounded better, and we are proud to have preserved what was an exciting and stunning evening at Tower Grove Park. Sit back and enjoy this remarkable recording, the Artistry of Hugh Smith, a wide-ranging collection of tenor favorites; just don’t imagine yourself in Tower Grove Park in that Summer sweltering heat!
