Is it true that Jesus told us to eat his flesh and drink his blood?

Well, this idea comes from John chapter 6, where Jesus said to his disciples, "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day."

So I think Jesus is speaking in a layered way. Firstly, it's not literal. Of course, he was not saying, "Eat my body, eat my corpse." Some of the layers that we can take from it is, first, Jesus is teaching a spiritual idea in a physical way; just like you would ingest food and take that into your body, he's saying to internalize this truth—take Jesus, take me into your heart.

The second thing I think we're seeing is Jesus is foreshadowing communion, a time when at the Last Supper he's going to hold the bread and the wine and say, "This is my body and my blood."

And then the third thing Jesus is doing is contrasting the Old Covenant with the New Covenant. In the Old Covenant, our sins were atoned for through the blood of an animal. But in the New Covenant, our sins are washed away by the perfect blood of Jesus Christ.
