The latest Global E-Waste Monitor report highlights a sharp rise in worldwide electronic waste generation, with the average person now producing around 8 kilograms of e-waste every year. Europe stands out as both the largest per-capita generator and one of the most effective recyclers. At 17.6 kilograms of e-waste produced per person, the region generates more than twice the global average. Yet Europe also achieves a 42.8 percent formal recycling rate, meaning about 7.5 kilograms per person are properly collected and processed.

Globally, the story is more challenging. Only one-fifth of all e-waste is formally recycled, leaving most discarded devices unmanaged or improperly handled. This poses environmental risks due to hazardous materials such as lead and mercury. It also results in severe resource losses. Even though 6 billion kilograms of valuable metals like gold, lithium, and rare-earth elements are recovered each year, another 1 billion kilograms are lost during formal recycling alone.

This report underscores the ongoing need for infrastructure investment, policy alignment, and improved recovery systems across global markets.
