The Langwiths sued their insurance agent, Janet Fitzgerald, for not advising them about coverage under their umbrella policy, resulting in partial exposure on a personal injury claim. They argued American National is responsible for Fitzgerald's actions as their agent. The district court granted summary judgment to Fitzgerald and American National, but the Iowa Supreme Court reversed on the coverage issue. The court held an insurance agent's duty is tied to their contractual agreement and they have no obligation to advise clients on additional coverage unless they specifically assume that duty or hold themselves out as an expert.
