Riding the metro from Monument to Haymarket. Newcastle, 15/04/24.

Haymarket is a station on the Tyne and Wear Metro, serving the city centre in Newcastle upon Tyne. The station joined the network in August 1980, following the opening of the line between Haymarket and Tynemouth – the first stage of the network to open.

Following the opening of the line between Haymarket and Heworth in November 1981, the station opened to through services. Prior to this, trains reversed using the crossover between Haymarket and Monument.

Haymarket is located at the northern end of Northumberland Street. It is a short walk from both Newcastle and Northumbria University, Newcastle Civic Centre and the Great North Museum: Hancock. It is located around 100 m (330 ft) from Haymarket Bus Station, and 250 m (820 ft) from Eldon Square Bus Station.

It is the deepest station on the Tyne and Wear Metro network. Prior to the station's refurbishment in the late 2000s, the staircase (since replaced by a third escalator) had 105 steps. The station also has underground rooms, restricted from the public, which contain archives and various historical documents.[citation needed]

The station was used by 3,216,144 passengers in 2017–18, making it the second-most-used station on the network after Monument (5,245,507).

Monument is an underground station on the Tyne and Wear Metro, serving Newcastle City Centre. Monument station was opened in November 1981 (platforms 1 & 2), with platforms 3 & 4 opening in November 1982.

The station is used by almost 6 million passengers per year, and is the busiest on the network. It is named after Grey's Monument, which stands directly above the station. It is also the only station to be situated on a line crossing.

Monument is a busy interchange station, with four platforms. Trains run as shown:

Platform 1: Trains towards South Hylton and trains towards South Shields (with additional peak time services to Pelaw)
Platform 2: Trains towards St. James via Whitley Bay and trains towards Newcastle Airport (with additional peak time services to Regent Centre and to Monkseaton)
Platform 3: Trains towards South Shields via Whitley Bay
Platform 4: Trains towards St. James
