• Biden aide Sullivan meets Xi, Chinese military brass in Beijing. Top White House aide Jake Sullivan held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, after a senior military official warned the United States to stop "collusion" with Taiwan in a rare one-on-one meeting. Sullivan, the first U.S national security adviser to visit China since 2016, stressed the importance of stability in the tense Taiwan Strait as he met with senior Chinese army chief Zhang Youxia. He also met Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister on Thursday where both sides agree for top leaders’ phone call in coming weeks.
• At least nine Palestinians killed as Israel mounts major West Bank operation. Israeli strikes killed at least nine people in different areas in Jenin and near Tubas, Palestinian health authorities said. Also, Israeli forces sent tanks deeper into Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip and launched strikes across the enclave as they battled Hamas-led militants, killing at least 34 Palestinians on Wednesday, according to medics.
• Afghan girls and women suffer three years after U.S. withdrawal. Three years of Taliban rule in Afghanistan has brought misery on that nation’s girls and women, say critics of the hardline regime. Both President Biden and Vice President Harris marked the anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal – but advocates say they want to see Washington push harder against the egregious human rights situation. VOA White House correspondent Anita Powell reports from Washington.

White House officials welcomed the rescue of an Israeli hostage held by Hamas Tuesday and said they are finalizing a Gaza cease-fire deal.
