Continuing in a three part discussion about piano technique problems, here I discuss one of the most common and abused words in all of music-LEGATO.
Legato is a term used to indicate playing in a "smooth, connected manner". It is the means through which we can imitate the voice at the keyboard, and there is nothing wrong with that.
However, it is CRITICAL to keep in mind that the piano is NOT a legato instrument by its' very nature, and so at best all we can do is render a LEGATO EFFECT and not a true legato at the piano. This lesson goes through this subtle but important distinction.
