There are a few steps you’ll need to follow to use the precedence diagram method.

1. Gather details on project activities, durations, and dates
2. Identify activities with a critical path from start to finish
3. Connect dependencies to find the optimal workflow

You’ll also need to keep in mind standard dependencies that connect activities in a precedence diagram. For instance, when you’re considering two tasks, Task A and Task B, these are the dependencies you’ll need to consider:

- Finish-to-Start (FS): Task B cannot start until task A has been completed
- Start-to-Start (SS): Task B cannot start until task A starts
- Finish-to-Finish (FF): Task B cannot be completed until task A is completed
- Start-to-Finish (SF): And finally, task B cannot be completed until task A starts
