During World War II, USS England (DE-635) carved its name into naval history with an extraordinary anti-submarine campaign. In just 12 days - between May 19th and May 31st 1944 - England sank six Japanese submarines while operating in the Southwest Pacific. Armed with a new, revolutionary weapon known as the Hedgehog anti-submarine mortar, skilled sonar operators, and an aggressive, disciplined crew, England was instrumental in crippling a Japanese naval effort to establish a picket line of submarines aim at crippling the American carrier fleet. The operation not only showcased the growing prowess of U.S. anti-submarine warfare but also dealt a serious blow to Japanese naval intelligence. In recognition of the ship’s unprecedented success, Admiral Ernest King, Chief of Naval Operations, proclaimed: “There will always be an England in the United States Navy.”
