Tchaikovsky's first masterpiece! The symphonic poem "Romeo and Juliet" was described by the composer as a "fantasy overture". It is based on the famous play by William Shakespeare. Here it was performed in 2009 by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo under the direction of Yakov Kreizberg at the Prince's Palace of Monaco.

The impetus for the composition came from Tchaikovsky's fellow composer Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev (1937-1910). Balakirev met the French composer Hector Berlioz in 1867, who had traveled to Russia and was celebrated there. After making this acquaintance, Balakirev encouraged his young colleague Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) to take inspiration from Berlioz's opera “Roméo et Juliette” and to use the same Shakespearean story as the basis for his symphonic piece.

The performance of "Romeo and Juliet" took place in Moscow on March 16, 1870. Alexeyevich Balakirev was not, however, very enthusiastic about Tchaikovsky's creation and convinced him to make changes. Tchaikovsky thus revised the work twice, once in the summer of 1870 and again in 1880. This third version was also performed at the concert in Monaco.
