There’s lots of talk about GDPR at the moment, so we decided to take a closer look at the details and find out what it means for retailers.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is a new EU regulation that will come into force from May 25, 2018.

It replaces the 1995 data protection directive and its central aim is to give greater protection to individuals and how their private data is handled - meaning that it is especially important for online retailers.

One of the key elements of the new regulation is in the area of consent, which the customer has to positively opt into. Pre-ticked boxes will not be sufficient to prove consent was given and areas such as how cookies are used will have to be reviewed.

Another big factor is openness. Individuals can ask for any information that’s held about them to be provided, changed or deleted.
