Auroras (e.g., Northern Lights) are moving curtains of color in the night sky. They are caused by charged particles from the sun channeled by Earth’s magnetism towards northern and southern polar areas. These particles cause the gasses in the air to glow. In recent weeks the sun’s activity has spiked creating auroras visible to many people even down to latitudes that rarely see them.

Our speaker is Vincent Ledvina, the “Aurora Guy”, a space physics Ph.D. student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He is also a “night sky photographer and aurora fanatic”. He will discuss the origins of auroras and share his adventures in chasing them and present many images he has amassed.

His website, http://theauroraguy.com, contains images, books, and merchandise to explore; a brief biography; and a short video about his work on auroras. He will bring these studies to life for us and answer questions you may have on aurora.
