Mazda has been trying to move upmarket, and the 2019 CX-9’s Signature trim now stretches the 3-row crossover’s MSRP range up near $50,000. The exterior styling certainly writes an expensive check, but Chris Wardlaw isn’t convinced the interior can cash it.
Under the hood, Mazda 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine makes 227 horsepower with regular fuel, 250 horsepower with premium fuel, and 310 pound-feet of torque regardless of which octane you choose. The result is plenty of power around town, although the vehicle lags a bit when passing on the highway. And despite the move from an optional V6 to the turbo-4, the CX-9 failed to return it’s EPA estimated fuel economy over 700 miles of driving.

Inside, the third row offers a surprising amount of legroom, but no seat in the CX-9 offers adequate thigh support, and Chris wasn’t able to get comfortable in the driver’s seat. Mazda Connect offers many methods of control, but the touchscreen is disabled unless the CX-9 is stationary. Safety-wise, all trims above the Sport offer a wide array of advanced technology (and even the Sport has an optional package with the full array of features). Combined with great scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), this tech makes the CX-9 a safe option for families.

Pricing on this 3-row SUV ranges from $32,280 for a base, Sport front-wheel drive trim, to more than $45,000 for a Signature AWD. For more information on the 2019 Mazda CX-9, read Chris’ full review on CarGurus: https://cargur.us/s2w8T
