The trim function in excel removes unwanted space, such as extra spaces between words, or at the beginning or ending of a sentence, however, it does not remove a single space between words.

For instance, here is a person’s name with some extra spaces between first and last names. To apply this, we left click on the cell we want the output in, in this case cell B2, so it is highlighted. Next we type in an equals sign, then we type in tri and a drop down box will appear. We are going to left double click on the first option, trim.

Now, in our answer cell we have the word trim, then an open parenthesis, this is asking us to put some information in here. From here, we are going to left click on the cell we want to apply the trim to, in this case cell A2. Next, we type in a closed parenthesis, and then hit the enter key, and we have our trimmed answer, as you can see there is only a single space between the first and last name.

Here is an example with multiple words and extra spaces between each of the words. I have put the trim function in cell B3, so, I hit the enter key, and now the words are separated by a single space.

And here is an example in cell A4, where there are several spaces before the text, again, I have the trim function in the cell next to it, I hit the enter key, and the spaces have been removed.

One quick note, if you delete the data in column A, as you see here, it will also remove the data from column B, because that is referencing the data in column A. To avoid this, you can copy the data from column B, then right click in column A and go down and left click on paste special. Then in the pop up box, left click on values, then left click on ok. Now you can delete column B, and all of your text is cleaned up and neat.
