Moses proclaims to the people that he is 120-years-old that very day and that the time had come for him to pass on the mantle of his leadership and authority to his successor, Yehoshua (Joshua). He then entrusts the Levites with the Torah’s safekeeping, to be kept alongside the Ark of the covenant. The mitzvah of ‘hakhel’ is given to the people, which translates as “to gather”. Every seven years during the festival of Sukkot the entire people should gather together, men women and children, as a one body and one accord, at Jerusalem and the king of Israel would read the Torah to them.

Vayeilech concludes with the prediction that the people of Israel will turn away from their covenant with YAH, causing Him to hide His face from them, but also with the promise that the words of the Torah “shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their descendants.” Giving a glimpse of a certain future redemption that awaits them, the redemption through Yeshua HaMeshiach that awaits us all.
