Moran crashed inside the broken tail of his bomber, survived catastrophic injuries, endured brutal captivity, experimental surgery, starvation, forced marches, and the infamous Black March—where thousands of Allied prisoners died.

He was one of only three Allied airmen in history to survive a fall from combat altitude without a parachute.
