The Story Premise
The Setting: The game takes place entirely within Midgar, a dystopian industrial metropolis. The city is divided into two worlds: the wealthy, high-tech city on the "plates" above, and the impoverished, scrap-heap slums below.
The Conflict: The world is controlled by the Shinra Electric Power Company, a mega-corporation that powers the city by draining the planet’s life force, known as "Mako."
The Protagonist: You play as Cloud Strife, a stoic mercenary and former elite soldier for Shinra. He is hired by Avalanche, a ragtag eco-resistance group led by the passionate Barret Wallace. Their mission is to bomb a Mako reactor to stop Shinra from killing the planet. What starts as a simple job quickly spirals into a conspiracy involving ancient entities, biological experiments, and a legendary soldier named Sephiroth who haunts Cloud's past.
The Gameplay Loop
The gameplay is a unique fusion of real-time action and tactical strategy.
Hybrid Combat: You move and attack in real-time (hacking, slashing, shooting), but this fills up an ATB (Active Time Battle) Gauge. Once full, you can "pause" time to issue tactical commands like spells, items, or special abilities.
Party System: You control a party of up to three characters (swapping between them on the fly). Each character feels distinct:
Cloud: Close-range sword fighter, balanced.
Barret: Long-range tank with a gun-arm.
Tifa: incredibly fast martial artist who builds up stagger.
Aerith: Magic caster who excels at ranged support.
The Stagger System: A core mechanic where you pressure enemies to fill a "Stagger" bar. Once staggered, the enemy is immobilized and takes massive bonus damage.
Materia: The magic system relies on equipping orbs called Materia into your weapons and armor. This lets you customize any character to be a healer, elemental mage, or tank depending on your loadout.

It is vital to know that this game does not cover the entire story of the original Final Fantasy VII.
Expanded Scope: The original game’s "Midgar section" was only about 5–6 hours long. Remake expands this specific section into a full 40-hour standalone game.
Character Depth: Because of this expansion, side characters who originally had very few lines are given full backstories, arcs, and personalities.
