This Arabic hymn along with Ekhrestos Anesti    • Ekhrestos Anesti (Coptic Church versi...   are the most famous Easter hymns of the Coptic Church. It's chanted in the holy masses of the Easter and Eastertide until the Ascension Day before the cycle of the cross around the church and after reading the Praxis (the Acts of the Apostles), also in the Matins of Whitsun.

The whole length of the hymn isn't usually used in the mass and it is often chanted until the end of the fourth portion, وأبْدَلَ لَنَا العُقُوبَةَ بِالخَلاصْ.

The hymn is one of the entirely Arabic hymns used in liturgy written in the modern era. It was written by Fr Philotheus Baghdadi Saleh and composed by the musician Mikhail Girgis El Batanouny and Fr Philotheus in the late 19th or early 20th century. Fr Philotheus is a venerated modern saint known for his efforts in education and defending Orthodox faith. He was known for eloquence (which is apparent in the hymn) which also made him a representative of the church meeting political leaders on behalf of Pope Kerolos V. He has lots of books and sermons, his biography can be found here https://st-takla.org/Saints/Coptic-Or...

There is a Coptic translation of the hymn but it's not used in liturgy as it's always chanted in the original Arabic, I added it in the Coptic captions and it also can be found in the links below. There is a performance in Coptic by the Heritage of the Coptic Orthodox Church chorus, you can download their app from here https://copticheritage.org/library/pr... and you'll find it under the name Nie Khoros Teero or from here http://www.athanasiusdeacons.net/data... from "sources of the melody" tab then the one by the Coptic Heritage chorus. (You'll have to right click or long press the download button then choose save link or download link).

Performance by Moalim Ibrahim Ayad.
