In 1721, Spain built its first fort called Presidio Nuestra Señora de Loreto de la Bahía, near the coast to claim Texas and stop the French. It was also meant to protect a nearby mission. But things were tough, so by 1726, both the fort and the mission moved inland to the Guadalupe River.
The fort you see today was built in 1749, moved to its current spot on the San Antonio River. This was a smart move because it put the fort at an important crossing point between Texas and Mexico. For many years, it was a busy army base, a place for trading, and where Spanish soldiers, priests, and native groups met and sometimes clashed. The little church inside the fort, called Our Lady of Loreto, has been used non-stop since the 1700s!
As the 1800s began, big changes were happening. Presidio La Bahía became a key place in the fight for Mexico's independence from Spain. It was captured and retaken many times, showing just how important it was. Spanish, then Mexican, and later Texan soldiers all took turns holding the fort, making it one of the most fought-over places in Texas history.
The most heartbreaking part of the fort's story happened during the Texas Revolution. In October 1835, Texan fighters took over the fort. Colonel James Fannin and his Texan soldiers made it stronger and even called it "Fort Defiance." It was inside the fort's church that the Goliad Declaration of Independence was signed.
But their defiance didn't last long. After a battle, Colonel Fannin and his men had to surrender to the Mexican General Urrea. On March 27, 1836, a very sad event happened: the Goliad Massacre. General Santa Anna ordered Colonel Fannin and almost 350 Texan prisoners to be killed right there. This terrible loss made the Texans shout, "Remember Goliad!", which helped them win the war later at San Jacinto.
After the revolution, Presidio La Bahía was left to crumble for many years. But in the 1960s, a big effort was made to fix it up, making it look as much like it did in the 1700s as possible. Today, it's a special historical place. Visitors can walk its old grounds and learn about the brave people who fought for Texas's freedom.
Presidio La Bahía isn't just an old fort; it's a powerful reminder of Texas's history. It's a place where you can almost hear the echoes of the past and remember the sacrifices made.
