Before humans arrived on Moa's Ark, the land was covered with trees of enormous size and antiquity, from the coast almost to the top of the mountains. But in only one thousand years, nearly three quarters of these forests have been destroyed. Only fragments remain, but most are now safe thanks to the kiwi brand of conservation.

To these forests comes David Bellamy. A botanist in search of a tree he first saw on a postage stamp as a child. His search begins at fossilised trees nearly 200 million years old at the southern end of Moa's Ark. Then he heads north into the vast expanses of New Zealand's southern beech forests, where he finds a scale insect with the longest bottom in the world, and a group of conservationists fighting to stop the woodchipping of precious native timber resources.
After a bath in the purest foam in the world, he visits a forest, not of trees but of tiny mouths, living under a golden layer of freshwater in the depths of Milford Sound. Through kahikatea and pine forests, he continues north to his beloved "dinosaur forests'' - the giant podocarps of Whirinaki and New Zealand's best kept secret.

In the warm north he finds the kauri, the leviathan of the forest, and like the great whales, the world must mourn their slaughter. At Waipoua, the very alter of forest conservation in New Zealand, he at last comes face to face with the tree on his stamp: Tane Mahuta "Lord of the Forest". His journey has been a celebration of the forests of Moa's Ark, and also a plea for the conservation of such areas for the future.
